Why We Do Trunk Shows

I’m a very early planner. I’ve already completed and chatted about my Turkey Day and everything it entails. I know how we’re going to decorate the tree and I have caviar ordered for Christmas Eve. As a small business owner, Turkey Day is really about Black Friday weekend, a necessary but less than ideal American tradition.
I’m on the host committee for a fundraising event this evening (happily in my Veronica) and will be poaching shrimp and cutting limes the minute after I hit publish. Long story short, I have (and really, I’m not sure who does) nothing else to add on the subject of Thanksgiving. ***Unless you’re the Fedex agent that I’ve been stalking 24/7 to help get our fabric *unstuck* in Anchorage, Alaska. In that case, I have a lot to say.
Why Trunk Shows Are Back
One thing I’m truly so excited to see jump on my holiday calendar is the return of our TRUNK SHOWS! It was an integral part of our research before we officially launched our business and five years later, I still love them. Here’s a little inside baseball I’ve learned over the years selling our clothes “IRL” all over the country.

It’s the best. Running a direct-to-consumer company from a New York City apartment can be extremely isolating. While Instagram DMs are great, immediate feedback (most of the time…) I’m a very outgoing person and I love to sell. I can go weeks without being face to face with a customer and I’ve learned over the years, that’s not ideal. Meeting y’all and seeing you try on our product is the number one most rewarding part of our business.

What I Learn From Seeing Customers Try Things On
I learn so, so much from seeing all our customers, size 00-18+, try the product on in front of me. I am in charge of how the clothing fits, hard stop. In our day to day work I run fittings, organize grading (how the pattern grows size to size) and execute all changes from first prototype to bulk production. I change hem lengths, dart positions, sleeve bicep circumferences, everything you can think of, based on what I see during trunk shows. It’s invaluable. I love hearing your feedback and suggestions of what MM product you’d love to see.

The Funniest Things I Get Asked
And to leave you, here are some of the funniest things I’ve been asked schlepping my product across the states.
“Are these clothes for adults?”

“Is this shift waterproof?”

“And where is your mother from?”

“You should buy my apartment, I’m looking to get rid of it.”

“Someone raided the venue’s minibar, was it you?”

P.S. It wasn’t me;)
We’re heading to Boston and Palm Beach in December and couldn’t be more excited! My 2024 calendar is wide open…where should we go?! Leave suggestions in the comments below. xx
